An acerbic piece in Today's times suggests that rather than the olitical parties' 'would be Chancellors' (Alistair, Vince and George) debating in glib sound bytes on TV, they should take themselves down to Putney Heath for a duel - just as Lord Castereagh and George Canning famously did two hundred years ago.

Now I'm not sure what the law now is about duelling on Putney Heath - would the Conservators have a say in the rules of engagement? Would the duellists need licence certificates for duelling pistols. Could any of the contestants write off any resulting fatal injury as an efficiency saving (in the last duel it was poor George who came off the worse)? And would a surface cut be sufficient for victory?
