| Yesterday I watched the mutilation of a magnificent poplar tree just past the end of my garden. It has been there in all its glory for at least 45 years but has now been reduced to something akin to a totem pole. As Wandsworth Council used to be brilliant on trees I can only hope that the fact that they removed every single branch and leaf, leaving nothing but the trunk, will not result in the death of this formerly magnificent specimen. Another tree just a few yards away has already been killed by this sort of mutilation, and in fact another nearby tree has also been severely damaged by this treatment although it did at least survive. There are apparently 8 million trees in London - does Wandsworth therefore think that no one will notice what they are up to, as they certainly do not seem to be replacing these murder victims? |
