| The VAT cut has been paraded by the government as ‘fully funded’. The money is supposed to come from abandoning Labour’s digital ID programme. But this programme was never funded in the first place. In other words it is an unfunded spending commitment. The move has been criticised by Darren Jones, the former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and by the former head of the institute for Fiscal Studies. |
