Two BBC broadcasts today regarding the catastrophe that is happening at Elliott School. First this morning on BBC Radio London 94.9 and tonight on the BBC1 6.30pm London news. Shocking footage of the devastated playing fields that the Council say were never used for sport - six tennis/netball courts, football pitch etc. It has taken the BBC two years to uncover the suppressed Freedom of Information documents where Michael Gove's own special advisory panel unanimously opposed the sell-off of these playing fields, published on the very day that the Olympic flame passed through Wandsworth. A tissue of lies from beginning to end, and Eric Pickles is now looking at matters for a second time, following our request to revoke the planning application. Meanwhile the pupils study in portacabins in the midst of a huge Barratt building site, with no outdoor play space on site for over two years. WBC have issued the same old press release from two years ago. They are not selling playing fields, just "surplus sloping concrete." Given the recent warnings from the Local Government Association and London Councils predicting a massive shortfall of school places of over 133.000 by 2018, how on earth can this educational land be described as surplus? They have stated that Mr Gove's advisory panel gave flawed advice, and continue to site the Dover House Playing Fields as a viable alternative for teams sports. Dover House playing fields have been leased to Roehampton University and only have to remain as such for the first ten years of the lease, until 2020. After that, who knows? Mr Pickles has just taken control of Tower Hamlets. Wandsworth's planning department needs similar regulation and close scrutiny. |
