Sorry from dredging this up from x weeks ago, I've only just found this forum. Each time they work on this junction the cycle path coming up West Hill past the junction continuing up West Hill is obstructed in order to put up advance warning signs about the road closure etc. Yet there are no similar advance warning signs warning of the cycle path being closed which could allow an alternative route ( e.g. by going up Merton Rd ). The earlier diversion along Putney Bridge Road never says WHAT it is diverting away from or where it goes to, and, upon investigation, is of no use to cyclists wanting to continue up West Hill as it goes in completely the wrong direction, taking them half a mile or so out of their way, via several roads which are, or course, considerably more busy and dangerous that the cycle path that they'd otherwise end up on ( baring the numrous signs obstructing it ). As you may be aware, most cycle paths are in fact more trouble than they're worth, but despite it's shortcomings, I find this one to be rather useful, presumably for the same reasons as it was put there for in the first place, i.e. to seperate cyclists tired from cycling up West Hill from the congested motorised traffic, through the junction, and continuing further up West Hill. Given there must have been ( unusually good ) justification(s) for putting this cycle path in place, how can it then be justified to obstruct it like this? I.e. Such that the signs for the general traffic force cyclists off the cycle path back in to the traffic which the cycle path is presumably intended to seperate them from. Worse still, this is explicitely at times when the traffic at the junction is considerably worse than usual. There must be a way of putting the signs up without blocking the cycle path ( before the cycle path starts maybe? ), or at least putting up some signs which _inform_ cyclists ( and other road users ) what's going on, so that they can make their own choices ( divert along Putney Bridge Road or Merton Rd, etc. as appropriate ), rather than assuming that they're sheep who'll happily cycle in the wrong direction when they've got a big hill to exert themselves up. |
