I received an up to date report at lunchtime today and am posting it here for reassurance "It is plainly not possible to grit all roads throughout the Borough at the same time immediately snow falls, but this is carried out following a prioritisation order. For our roads (not TfL routes) first the main traffic routes carriageways are gritted, then the quieter side roads. Additionally footway areas are prioritised, such as around stations, hospitals, clinics, schools and main busy shopping areas followed by steep hilly footways and footways on residential roads. In the recent bad weather all our roads were gritted four times. As far as stock of grit is concerned, Wandsworth had the foresight to have a salt barn constructed many years ago and we are well prepared for winter weather. A conservative estimate puts us as still having at least 850 tonnes of rock salt available for immediate use. We only order the salt/grit necessary to replenish stocks, it is not a standard order each year. Last year we ordered 2,000 tonnes when our stock was low, although it was the worst winter for 30 years and we did not run out of salt. This year we originally ordered 1,000 tonnes and then another 800 tonnes and, as there was already a stock of salt in the salt barn, we in fact have more salt this year than last year. For now, I am confident that we have enough resources to deal with most conditions that we might face. However, I have never experienced so much snow in London before Christmas and my memory spans over half a century. I am confident we have the resources to deal with inclement weather. We have detailed plans for gritting roads. We have adequate salt stocks and crews on standby 24 hours a day; not just drivers but vehicle maintenance staff to ensure the gritters are working for as much of the day and night as possible. However, these vehicles can and do get damaged because they are out in ice and snow and need repair. You will appreciate that it would be a poor use of resources to have too many gritting lorries sitting idle for most of the year as they cost some £90,000 each to purchase. With some 224 miles of road and 455 miles of pavement we simply cannot clear every part quickly and, in London, on most occasions the thaw sets in before the end of the gritting programme. Having said that, in the first bout of snow in late November / early December, the priority carriageways were gritted 5 times and the borough roads at least three times (some four times). In the second bout, now and still in progress, priority carriageways have been gritted four times and a fifth is currently in progress (in advance of forecast low temperatures Christmas Day and Boxing Day). Borough roads have been gritted at least three times (many four times)". With best wishes for a happy Christmas Cllr Rosemary Torrington Thamesfield Ward |
