Putney is seeing a surge of proposals for redevelopment schemes, incorporating tall buildings, to replace the 1960's/70's office blocks along the Upper Richmond Road, from the High Street to East Putney Station. Local residents and the Putney Society have been invited by the developers to view the proposals and to give their views. All on the Upper Richmond Road, first an 11-storey hotel proposed for the Tote House site at Woodlands Way/Oakhill Road, then a scheme with a 15-storey block at Putney Place, opposite East Putney Station, then a new Tileman House (near Putney Hill) proposal for a 12-storey block and now the Capsticks site, next to East Putney Station with two blocks, 9-storeys and 15-storeys. And the council is envisaging other sites in Putney for tall buildings such as Sainsburys in Werter Road, the Telephone Exchange in Montserrat Road and the TKMaxx/Halfords site between Lacy Road and Felsham Road. What is curious is that people in Putney (and Councillor Edward Lister, the Council Leader) have made it clear that they do not want tall buildings in Putney. So, why is the council encouraging the developers to propose them? The Putney Society has organised a special public meeting on this issue at the Brewer Building, St Mary's Church, Putney Bridge at 7.30pm next Tuesday 30 November to hear about the council's policies to change Putney this way. The speaker will be Martin Howell, the council's planner in charge of the Local Development Framework which will, when completed, replace the old Borough Plan, the Unitary Development Plan. Everyone interested in how Putney might change should come to the meeting. |
