Hi Ian

Those of us who are involved with Neighbourhood Watch and similar community initiatives have until recently been provided with weekly briefings of crimes committed in the area. The victims are not identified - the only information provided is the name of the road in which the crime occurred, plus of course any description, if available, of the suspects. This is very useful for alerting residents of crimes occurring in the area.

Some weeks ago we received the following note:

"I am afraid that I am unable to bring you a crime briefing
this week, due to a little difficulty concerning information sharing and data protection issues.

We are hoping to resolve the situation and will keep you informed, but it is likely that the briefings will not be resumed for some time."

To date no one has responded to my request for details of the problem. Residents want to know what crimes are happening in their area and victims want others to know about them too.

If you are able to elicit any response from either the police or Wandsworth Council why we as residents should be deprived of one of the few measures we have for protecting ourselves from crime, I, for one would be very grateful.

If there is something in the law which is causing the perceived problem, (and I have doubts about that from my understanding of the Act,) it seems very clear to me that an urgent change to the law is required.
