Correct Alan. A big petition was organised in Mortlake opposing the (small) Sainsburys opening on White Hart Lane. In every other window the posters read: "Don't use the store." and "Don't let Sainsburys rip the heart out of White Hart Lane."

People wrote letters, Councillors were petitioned, meetings arranged....but the store opened. And it has to be said that for the first three months or so it was fairly empty.

Two years on it's doing brisk trade. I think we all like the theory of small independent shops but the reality is we tend to vote with our wallets.
