The economics of running a local history museum are extremely challenging.  I am not aware of any which exist without external financial support, usually from the local council but also from the National Lottery, the Arts Council or any number of other bodies whose own funding is likely to be drying up in the current economic climate.

So even with the benefit of a £2,000,000 bequest from the Hintze Charitable Foundation this is going to be a huge struggle.  The Museum will benefit from a rental subsidy from the council for five years but it's completely on its own after that.  There is absolutely no guarantee that the Hintzes will put more money in once their £2M has gone.

I am not saying that entry charges are the answer but there does have to be a reliable source of funding for the museum not just to pay the light bills, staff salaries and so on, but also to make sure the artefacts entrusted to it are kept in the right climate controlled conditions so they do not deteriorate with time.

The Friends of Wandsworth Museum (of whom I am the Treasurer) has supported both the old council-run museum and the new one by providing volunteer support and fundraising activities.  We are always on the lookout for volunteers who will give their time and expertise to support the museum in the years to come.  Financial donations will also be welcomed of course as the £2M is being used up at a frightening rate, half at least having been spent just equipping the museum.

Anyone with ideas how to finance a local history museum please step forward now!  The concept of a local history museum with full community support is going to be tested as never before in Wandsworth and I hope the imminent opening and attendant publicity will get people interested in our local history.

I am told that one visit to the museum should be enough to excite and inspire anyone - I very much hope so!  And please also remember that its education outreach programme has been benefiting shcools in Wandsworth throughout the period since the old museum closed down.  This included the wonderful Evacuation Re-enactment Project involving Beatrix Potter School and the village of Shamley Green in Surrey.

If you are interested in joining the Friends please email us at wandsworthmuseumgroup@hotmail.co.uk and we will send you an application form and one of our recent newsletters.  Friends will get concessions on the entrance fee and on purchases in the shop.

The entrance fee by the way covers a year's worth of unlimited further visits.  And it can be Gift Aided (both the Museum Company and the Friends are registered charities)
