Adam, what a terrible, terrible shame, for behind the scenes there is an enormous raft of evidence that the police do a terrific amount of investigating. Of course, a lot of it has to be covert on occasion so that 'they can get their man', so to speak, but get their results they will. That's one thing. A second very important point is that unless crime is reported, the police overall will be unable to allocate resources appropriately in order to deal with it. If there are many relatively low-level offences of this nature going unreported, then the immediate district is at risk of having resource allocated to another part of the Borough, if not London, to deal with areas with higher reported crime figures. That's a fact of life. So reporting is in everybody's interests, and it is mildly selfish - no, perhaps that is too strong a word - 'being unaware of one's responsibilities' not to do so. Thirdly, a failure to report means inability to claim for insurance if something has been stolen. Fourthly, if the good lady much later discovers that she has suffered some injury from the incident [unlikely it has to be said] she might not be able to claim from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. Yes, victims really should report these things! |
