What's changed in the last 100 years is that vastly more Londoners now have cars and the free time to use them to visit the park. Couple that with the congestion on the surrounding roads driving vast numbers to rat-run through the park, and you get to today's situation with the park at near saturation point, with massive queues to get a parking space on a hot day. Combine all that with a broke country and soaring wages for those who work in the park, and it's not hard to see the pressure for park users to 'pay their way'. However, I agree with some previous people who suggested we find a way to charge the ratrunners - their use of the park should be charged too. There must be a way of getting 20p out of a driver without causing a queue? |
