From the Wellcome Collection Coming of Age exhibition: walking stick belonging to Charles Darwin. Unknown maker. England. 1839-81 Whalebone. ivory and glass Wellcome Collection / Science Museum Group A4962 This walking cane was owned by Charles Darwin. The skull is a reminder of death and of life's preciousness. His theory of evolution, published while in his 50s, made him internationally famous. Images of the scientist in older age with a long white beard circulated widely. Darwin often developed his ideas on foot - perhaps this cane aided thought as well as movement. Walking sticks, crutches and Zimmer frames have become symbols of older age, with varying associations of status and vulnerability |
