I've always wondered about the position of St. Mary's Church bits of which must count as Putney's oldest surviving building. There was no Thames Barrier or Thames Embankment when it was built and much of what is now Putney would have been flood plain. The church doesn't seem to be in a particularly elevated position and, on a bend in the river, you would assume was vulnerable to period flooding.
