| Luxury beliefs can be described as opinions aimed at advertising the virtue of those who express them while costing them nothing. One example is the view that the rich should be taxed to fund public services. This is often advocated by individuals who are unlikely to be asked to make a financial contribution themeselves. Another is the view that the threat posed by Hamas does not justify Israel's campaign in Gaza, a judgment easy to make from the safety of Putney. Neither of these issues is straightforward, but the individuals who profess such views are often unwilling to listen to any mitigating arguments, dismissing those who make them as 'right wing' or worse. |
