Surveyor's Measuring Wheel, used by Thomas Telford (1757-1834); Shrewsbury Museum SURVEYORS MEASURING WHEEL used by Thomas Telford (1757-1834), first of the great modern civil engineers, who held the appointment of County Surveyor of Shropshire from 1750 until his death. In Shropshire alone he built forty-two road bridges but he is best known for his work on canals and such Government projects as the rebuilding of the road from London to Holyhead and the establishment of communications in the Highlands of Scotland (which included road, canal and harbour works). In all these spheres he pioneered the scientific development of die structural use iron. |
