| I am surprised that there has been no comment on the Forum on David Lammy’s bill to break with a 1000 year tradition and end trial by jury in England and Wales for all but the most serious crimes, such as murder, rape and manslaughter. The justification for this step is the present backlog of criminal cases. A less radical solution might be to extend the time when the courts are in sitting, which at present is 10.30 to 4.40 Monday to Friday for around 30 weeks of the year. |
