Stats on accidents are based on the speed of vehicles. Putting a 20mph signs up does not necessarily mean accidentals will be reduced. Vehicles may still being travelling more than the 20 mph speed limit. Also heavy vehicles such as buses and lorries can cause disproportionate injuries due to their weight even at low speeds. Making major routes the same speed limit as minor roads may also push traffic on roads that are least suitable and increase accidents. Looking at recent accidents it seems crazy that Wandsworth turn a blind eye (perhaps a form of local corruption) to illegally parked cars on for example Charlwood road which then often perform dangerous manoeuvres whilst supporting 20mph limits on the South circular. |
