Yes, it is an informative article albeit rather depressing too. I used to work by Lambeth Bridge and used to drive to work via Nine Elms. It was sad to see the first two high-rise buildings virtually empty. It was so obvious they were, that garden furniture started appearing in many balconies. The telling sign was that they all had exactly the same furniture.... It was revealed not long after that most of those empty flats had been bought by Asian investors, some of whom did so for grandchildren that had not yet been born..... The US embassy was being built at the time and a Waitrose Local opened opposite. What used to be a fairly pleasant drive with that feeling of openness by the river was transformed into a claustrophobic experience. Even the new US embassy building looks dwarfed... Not the finest hour for the Councils' planning departments. Neither is it the finest example of BoJo's vision for a thriving London. Nine Elms as well as Battersea Power Station seem to have become ghettos - expensive and exclusive, but ghettos nonetheless. |
