Any cloth face covering will reduce the probability of infection. It will not eliminate it. In an encounter with another person, one of you infected, both wearing masks, this double layer of protection reduces the likelihood of infection AND even if there is transmission of infection, reduces the number of virus particles transferred, which is thought to be important.

The science just isn't there to provide definitive proof either way. No-one is ever going to do experiments where they take a human subject, infect them with Covid-19, get them to breathe (or shout) at another human subject and see if that subject gets infected.

So use your common sense.

If you want to be 100% safe, as opposed to just safer, don't go out. Or get one of those suits you see in news pieces about Ebola.

Since so many people refuse to wear masks and ignore social distancing (probably don't wash their hands even after going to the toilet either), the sooner medical grade masks (N95) are available for all, the better. Then we can protect ourselves and worry less about the actions of others. Until there is a vaccine, you're not getting me on a plane, in a gym, in a pub or any crowded, poorly ventilated indoor space again. And "poorly ventilated" includes anywhere with air-con that simply recirculates the air without filters.

Alternatively, if Boris and his chums can make some genuine effort to eradicate the infection (2000 new people a day in the UK at present with symptoms, which means 5-10x that number altogether), I will relax my guard.

The hospitality industry can go hang until then.
