If it came across as harsh then I'm sorry but it is reality. I agree we should try and shop locally and try to keep a High Street worthy of the name. But I don't go along with the mantra "support small shops". Again, Why? I feel just as sorry for M&S people, BHS people, Top Shop people, Halford people (the list goes on) who lost their jobs when said companies pulled out of PHS. So why are "small shops" a special case? One would like to think that all shops do a bit of research prior to signing a lease and opening ie: weighing up the competition/their prices/consumer appetite etc. And it's no good blaming "greedy landlords" (they are) or high business rates as these costs should have been factored in. Again, if you can't compete with your peers then you go out of business. Fact is we should be supporting all our High Street shops big or small.
