The idea is for the new bridge to go off at a slight angle and connect to Queen Caroline Street on the north side. By my reckoning that would eat into footpaths, green space and some parking space, but shouldn't necessitate any buildings being demolished. It's not ideal, but it's got to be better than the current cycle of the bridge being closed then patched up then closed etc etc ad nauseam. It may be that Hammersmith Bridge isn't salvageable and has to be rebuilt from scratch, but either way we need some way for emergency vehicles to get across in the meantime.
