@Paul. Agreed, if your capable and not in a hurry, walking is a great alternative and an opportunity to see London - and best avoid the main routes to avoid the worst of the pollution! If in a rush, good connection on the Waterloo service from Putney with interchanges at Clapham Junction for the Victoria and Overground services, and the Victoria Line at Vauxhall, or in the other direction at Richmond for other parts of the Overground and District Line.
