I've just been reminded about a sequence in Kubrick's film "Full Metal Jacket", where the US Marines are attacking Hue. There are a couple of scenes of their tanks firing at the city, and the tanks recoil a bit. It is the sequence of the film which includes the song "Surfin' Bird", and, well, "A-well-a everybody's heard, about the bird!" (so that must remind you).

Anyway, as the filming of these scenes was done in East London, on the old Beckton Gasworks site, they will not have been live firing shells into the middle distance. So there must have been a mechanism to create this recoil effect. It would have to be quite powerful. Anybody with knowledge, ideas or suggestions?

I have just been to the Kubrick Exhibition at the Design Museum and I recommend it (although I didn't notice an explanation of my tank question). It ends mid-September:-
