Engine idling while parked and idling while in traffic are legally two different things. The first is a transgression and the second isn't. There seems no excuse for keeping an engine running while parked, though it's popular with chauffeurs, professional and amateur, and coach drivers, who like to keep their air conditioning or heating going for their own comfort and that of their clients. With a car not designed to stop its engine automatically, it can be quite dangerous to switch off in traffic, as that can disable the power steering and hydraulic brakes. |
