The French think of Notre Dame as a monument of France as well as being a house of worship for the many Catholics in this secular country. Meanwhile the Gilets Jaunes protests were severe on Saturday, in uproar about wealthy people paying money towards the rebuilding of the damaged  parts of this 12c building and not to them. If the wealthy didn't pay the State wouldn't be able to as the government has cut back on funding for renovation works that were already in progress. Even though  Notre Dame is the most visited 'tourist' attraction in Paris.
