“We're helping sort through an aunt's effects, and there are things that everyone would like to send to auction, as we don't know what else to do with them.” I think that Chiswick Auctions seem to have repositioned themselves to be more specialised and do not have their useful weekly general auctions, but they are worth checking. Loddon Auctions worked well for a friend. They are based at Arborfield, this side of Reading. However they are specialised. “Loddon Auctions specialise in the sale of cigarette & trade cards, postcards, sporting memorabilia and all manner of other paper collectables”. https://www.loddonauctions.co.uk/ I sell some things on Ebay. It is worth your while checking Ebay for items similar to your items and how they sold. This may help you to consider whether it is even worth trying to find some firm to auction the item. I enjoy bootfairs, so I would suggest that you consider selling items at one. House clearance firms themselves often appear at bootfairs, selling items which they have cleared. If items appear connected to a locality, do think of offering them as donations to the area’s local history library, or, museum. In my experience, almost nothing is worth as much as I expect or hope. There is the odd (and pleasing) significant exception to that rule, but you do have to work out whether the odd piece of luck is worth all the time and effort. One’s own time is valuable, too. “there are things that everyone would like to send to auction, as we don't know what else to do with them.” – everyone will need to help then. Finally, a rather tangential thought. It is often a good idea to take photos of items before moving them on. And photos take little space to store. Although finding the photos after a few years can be difficult. |
