Nye Bevan did not come up with the idea of the NHS: he was the minister charged with implementing the policy. And he did an awesome job. If any one person can be credited with conceiving the health service on roughly the line that Bevan implemented it was Viscount Dawson. Who? Well quite. He was one of those...what are they called? Oh yes: Conservatives. As for the claim that the NHS would only have happened under Labour, Beveridge was a Liberal and all three parties were signed up to implementing his report. |
